The Significance of Friday in Islam
Friday is regarded as the most important day of the week in Islam. It is considered the “Eid of the week,” a day of gathering, reflection, and prayer. The significance of Friday can be understood through the following points:
1. A Day of Gathering
The word “Jumu’ah” itself is derived from the Arabic root “Jama’a,” which means to gather. Friday is the day when Muslims congregate for the Jumu’ah prayer, a communal prayer that replaces the regular Dhuhr (noon) prayer. This gathering serves as a symbol of unity among Muslims, as they come together to worship Allah, listen to the sermon (Khutbah), and offer prayers.
2. A Special Day Mentioned in the Quran
Friday is explicitly mentioned in the Quran, which underscores its importance. In Surah Al-Jumu’ah (62:9-10), Allah commands the believers:
“O you who have believed, when the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumu’ah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you if you only knew. And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.”
These verses highlight the importance of attending the Jumu’ah prayer and engaging in the remembrance of Allah. The command to leave trade and worldly affairs during the time of prayer emphasizes the priority of spiritual over material pursuits on this blessed day.
3. A Day of Forgiveness and Mercy
Friday is a day when Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are abundant. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was made to enter Paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Hour will not be established except on Friday.” (Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith illustrates the connection between Friday and significant events in human history, marking it as a day of profound spiritual importance.
The Blessings of Friday
The blessings of Friday are numerous and encompass both spiritual and worldly benefits. Muslims are encouraged to maximize the benefits of this day by engaging in various acts of worship and good deeds.
1. The Jumu’ah Prayer
The Jumu’ah prayer is one of the most significant aspects of Friday. Attending this prayer is obligatory for adult male Muslims, and it is highly recommended for women and children as well. The Jumu’ah prayer consists of two Rak’ahs (units of prayer) and is preceded by a Khutbah (sermon), which provides guidance, reminders, and reflections on various aspects of Islamic teachings.
The importance of attending the Jumu’ah prayer is emphasized in several Hadiths. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever performs ablution (Wudu) perfectly, then comes to the Jumu’ah prayer and listens to the Khutbah attentively, his sins between that Friday and the next Friday will be forgiven, with the addition of three more days.” (Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith highlights the immense reward and forgiveness that can be attained by properly observing the Jumu’ah prayer.
2. Recitation of Surah Al-Kahf
One of the recommended acts of worship on Friday is the recitation of Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18 of the Quran). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.” (Sahih al-Jami’)
Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is believed to provide spiritual protection and enlightenment, serving as a source of guidance throughout the week.
3. Sending Blessings Upon the Prophet
Another significant act of worship on Friday is sending blessings (Salawat) upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet himself encouraged this practice, saying:
“Increase your recitation of Salawat upon me on Fridays, for your Salawat are presented to me.” (Sunan Abi Dawood)
Sending blessings upon the Prophet on Friday is a means of earning Allah’s favor, increasing love for the Prophet, and strengthening one’s connection to him.
4. Making Dua and Seeking Forgiveness
Friday is also a day when supplications (Dua) are highly encouraged, especially during the hour when Allah answers prayers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“There is an hour on Friday during which, if a Muslim prays and asks Allah for something good, He will give it to him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
While the exact timing of this special hour is not definitively known, many scholars believe it to be the last hour before sunset. Muslims are encouraged to make Dua throughout the day, seeking Allah’s forgiveness and asking for their needs.
The Sunnah Practices on Friday
In addition to the aforementioned acts of worship, there are several Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet) practices associated with Friday that Muslims are encouraged to observe.
1. Performing Ghusl (Full Ablution)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene on Friday. He said:
“Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds for the prayer and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Performing Ghusl before attending the Jumu’ah prayer is a recommended Sunnah that enhances one’s physical and spiritual readiness for the prayer.
2. Wearing Clean and Best Clothes
It is recommended to wear clean and the best available clothes on Friday, as a sign of respect for the sacredness of the day. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would wear his best garments on this day, setting an example for his followers.
3. Applying Perfume
Applying perfume is also a Sunnah practice on Friday. The Prophet encouraged Muslims to present themselves in the best possible manner when attending the Jumu’ah prayer, which includes smelling pleasant.
4. Arriving Early for Jumu’ah
Arriving early for the Jumu’ah prayer is highly encouraged. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“If one of you goes to the mosque in the first hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (for Allah’s sake); and whoever goes in the second hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if you go in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour, then it is as if he had offered an egg.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
